Port Burgas is the largest Bulgarian port in terms of cargo turnover, and services the southern Balkans industrial centres. It handles most of the cargo transit going to or coming from Macedonia, Serbia, and Central European countries.

Port Burgas is linked up with ports in the Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean by regular line services. The Bulgarian container operator, Bulcon, once per two-weeks, provides international container services via Burgas. Ro-Ro type vessels bridge Burgas and Poti (Georgia) as well as Burgas and Novorossiysk (Russia). These services are rendered weekly by the major Bulgarian company, So Mat, owned by Wily Betz. The modern Ro-Ro ships of the NaviBulgar company carry general cargoes, containers and trailers between Burgas and Northern Europe as well as the UK. The port also passes passengers and cars from the Far Eastern countries to the Black Sea region.

Annually, the port receives up to 2,000 vessels. Cargo handling in 2001 amounted to 12,444,000 t; 7.4M t of it was bulk liquid.

Today Port Burgas has 23 berths for general cargo, 4 for bulk cargo, 2 for Ro-Ro ships, and 3 for tankers. The waterfront's overall length is 3,900 m. There are open (310,000 sq. m) and sheltered (75,000 sq. m) storage areas, and a refrigerating warehouse (cap. 10,000 t).
