Key principle of transport logistics and logistics as a whole is expenses minimizing meant at funds saving thanks to cargo transportation scale and distance. The bigger the cargo is, the less transport expenses are per unit weight. More powerful vehicle types (railway and marine transport) are cheaper per unit weight of the transported cargo than less powerful (automobile and air transport).

Cost saving at the expense of cargo transportation scale emerges thanks to the fact that constant component of transport expenses is allocated to all the cargo, thus, the bigger it is, the less specific costs are per unit weight.

Cost saving at the expense of transportation range / mileage is based on the following principle: the longer the route is, the less transport expenses are per distance unit. For instance, to transport one cargo over 800 km is cheaper than to transport two cargos (of the same total weight) over 400 km. This effect is known as decreasing principle because specific costs per unit weight decrease as the cargo transportation distance grows.

These principles are taken into account by ITC in the evaluation process of the alternative transportation strategies.
