Two inland canals connect Varna East to Lake Varna, Lake Beloslav and Port of Varna West. In view of the stated safe canal depths, only vessels of draft less than 9,90 m (32'05") and airdraft up to 41,72 m. are allowed to Port of Varna West.

The existing depths of the ship berths and the approaches to them allow the handling of vessels of capacity up to 50 000 tonnes.

Port of Varna PLC offers full service — stevedoring, loading, discharging, forwarding, storage and various intermodal services.

In Port of Varna PLC operate 65 electric cranes and about 400 pieces of various ship, landside and warehouse port facilities. The port open-air storage area is 454 000 sq.m. and the warehouses have 76 000 sq.m.

It has a well-forked railway and road network. The existing port facilities allow the handling of practically all kinds of solid bulk, break-bulk, containerized and some liquid-bulk cargoes.

The structure of Port of Varna PLC includes 3 component port units — Varna East, Varna West, Balchik


Varna East

Varna East is situated deep into the Bay of Varna, at only 1 km distance from the centre of Varna town. It has excellent road and rail access and an international airport in vicinity (10 km), enabling to chose the best intermodal solutions.

The port is the main gate for Bulgaria's grain export and the unquestionable leader in container handling in the country. The only Passenger Terminal on the sea route between Istanbul and Odessa is here. It handles sugar, kaolin, metal scrap, molasses, granite, etc.

An integral part of Varna East structure is the Storage Base, also known as the Dry Port. It is a separate unit with a license for storage under Customs regime. Located at 5 km of the port, on a total area of 13 decars, it has 6 warehouses with identical structures and capacity. It specializes in storage of all types of cereals, soya meal, cocoa and general cargo.

Varna West

Varna West is the most modern new port facility in Bulgaria. It is located at 30 km of Varna town, on the west shore of Beloslav Lake. It is adjacent to the chemical factories of Devnya and enables direct handling on the scheme «factory-ship», reducing the transport and handling costs. The port has modern technologic lines for handling of soda, cement, coal, packed goods and containers.

  • Designed mainly for bulk cargoes /coal, coke, clinker/ and products /bulk and bagged/ of the near-to-port factories /soda ash, urea, various fertilizers, liquid chemicals.
  • Situated some 15 miles inland west of Varna with passing two canals and lake where foll restrictions applicable:
    • Max draft in the canal 33 ft bw /abt 1,012–11,014/
    • Max air draft for underbridge passing — 41.7 m
    • No official restrictions load and beam but based the various kinds
      of vessels you can consider the limits for max load/beam - 250/32 m
  • Available 17 berths with depths 33 ft all equipped with shore cranes
    with capacities     10–32 t
  • 1 berth for loading liquid chemicals
  • 3 berths for loading bulk and bagged soda and urea
  • Container/ro-ro terminal with 2 berths equipped with 2 gantry cranes with capacities 35 t each

Port of Balchik is situated at 40 km to the north of Varna. It specialises in handling of grain, vegetable oil and livestock.
